Summary – October-December 2011

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone – whether you’re following my posts or just happened to stumble onto this page! This’ll be my last post for the year. As Christmas approaches so does my stress level even though I try not to do too much 😦 .

At the end of October I decided I didn’t have much to write about so I would change my monthly summaries into quarterly ones. Having already written a quarterly summary for July to September, this seemed like a good time to make the change. Besides, since I have to visit my doctor every quarter, it seemed to make sense to time a summary after a visit.

So here we go – October to December 2011.

Well things have really been happening this quarter. I mentioned in my last summary that I would be starting on an okra and lemon juice cure. So that you don’t have to go back and read the whole summary, here is the gist of it. While I was on vacation I was told that if I cut an okra in half, put it in a glass of water overnight and drink the liquid the next morning, my blood glucose values would improve. Some one else told me lemon juice was supposed to help too. I googled and read that it helps ‘diabetics deal with problems that arise from decreased stomach acid and digestive enzymes’. I couldn’t find anything on okra.

My last visit to my doctor for a check-up was about less than two weeks after my return from my summer vacation to Asia and I mentioned that I was surprised that my Hb1AC value dropped, albeit by only 1 point from 6.8 to 6.7. I have been trying with my low carb diet to lower my Hb1AC but it has refused to budge. Not a big change so I took this skeptically expecting it to rise back up to 6.8 at the next check-up.

Well, I continued with the okra juice. I wasn’t so consistent with the lemon juice and it sort of died out. The blood glucose values after meals did not seem to reveal that anything I was doing was working and in the middle of November, I stopped taking the okra juice after I ran out of okra. Five days later I had a doctors appointment. He told me my Hb1Ac dropped to 6.3.   The only thing I can think of is the okra juice. So I have resumed taking it and am looking forward to my next check-up in February 2012 to see what happens.

And then something else happened. I have a book called Health though God’s Pharmacy, given to my by my aunt after my cousin died of cancer. It is written by an Austrian lady called Maria Treben. She was a housewife who became interested in herbs as natural remedies after taking a herbal mixture which cured her from an illness for which doctors had no hope. From then on, she devoted her time to learning about different herbal remedies and published her knowledge in the above book at the age of 64. Sales took off worldwide. Maria Treben has since passed away.

I’ve bought one or two of the herbs mentioned in her book before and taken them but have never seen any effect. Recently, my daughter fell sick (again) and I grabbed the book to see what I could use from my herb collection. Whilst flipping through it, I came across Stinging Nettle – supposed to be good against gout. My husband had gout. Later, I happened to be in the neighborhood pharmacy and saw Stinging Nettle for sale so I grabbed a packet. At home, my husband didn’t touch it. Oh well, so looks like I’m going to end up taking it as a prophylactic for rheumatism and whatever. So I started.

After three days of drinking Nettle tea, I noticed my blood sugar levels going crazy – I mean, good crazy. They were really low and I was getting hypoglycemia. The insulin was reacting really well. I had to reduce my dosage.

I continued taking the tea and I think it has flushed out all the bad stuff from my system making the insulin work better. The wonderful effects eased off after the second week – meaning my insulin intake has stabilised now at a lower level. I think the trick to taking herbs is you have to do it continuously and where possible, use fresh leaves and flowers.

If you are reading this and would like to try taking one of the above, please only do this if you are taking insulin and are confident of managing your doses. If you are taking insulin according to a pattern prescribed by your physician, then speak to him or her first. When I had hypoglycemia I was at home, knew what to do and had glucose sweets on hand.

If you are a Typ 2 diabetic on tablets, then for goodness sakes, don’t try this till you’ve consulted your physician. If you have light diabetes, okra and/or stinging nettle tea could cure you. Perhaps all your system needs is a little washing out! But I’m not the doctor here and can’t give proper advice, although having said that, my doctor had no clue about any of this stuff either.

December is always heavy-duty eating time and I’m not terribly good at keeping the carbs in check. However, my blood sugar levels have been pretty ok so far. Hope that I won’t erase all the good the okra and stinging nettle have done to my sugar levels in the next few days.

I was trying to create a low-carb Black Forest cake for our Christmas dinner dessert and have been experimenting with the base. Only thing is I’m now so sick of eating the cake base that I don’t even want to make the Black Forest Cake anymore. I think I’ll just convert the not-so-great cake base into a parfait or something like that. I waited too long to start experimenting.

I’ll try my best to eat sensibly without compromising too much in the coming days and I hope you do too!

    After reading your posts, I am encouraged to try more variety of foods that will not spike the Blood Glucose level. I will also share when I make the recpie and get the good results.

      Yes, please do share your experiences. It would take each individual forever to try out different foods and getting tips from others is really helpful. Getting a recipe right takes several test attempts so the process is tedious and slow.
