Protect yourself from cancer

5 Jul

It’s already July and I haven’t been thinking about writing anything in my blog nor experimenting with new recipes for some time. Why? I’ve been occupied reading a book. I’ve also got a little collection of things to eat which I’ve just been rotating every week and it’s keeping me satisfied.

The book I’ve been reading is called ‘Anticancer – A New Way of Life’ by David Servan-Scheiber.

I was surprised to discover that the book is selling like hot cakes and that there is even a website dedicated to it. A friend recommended the book to me and I bought it after reading the reviews on it. David Servan-Schreiber is a neuroscience researcher and psychiatrist. He describes his experience with brain cancer and how he has altered his lifestyle to help him stay cancer free. His book is written in an easy-to-read style with many examples and is supported by extensive research. This book is not only for those who have had cancer but also for those who haven’t. It explains how cancer comes about and what one can do to prevent the cancer cells in our body from becoming aggressive. Very interesting reading.

Servan-Schreiber tells us of many ways to strengthen our immune system – not only through diet but also our mental well-being. I found many things I could relate to. Not only that, I was happy to read that following a low carb diet is the right way to go but watch the fat. You don’t want to eat too much meat nor too much saturated fat. Oops, I haven’t been paying attention there. It is really hard to strike the right balance.

I’m going to incorporate his food suggestions into my recipes as much as possible – flaxseed, green tea, dark chocolate, mushrooms, herbs, cucurma (tumeric), cinnamon, ginger, garlic – all things I love.

The other thing I liked about the book was that it dealt with loss and death. These aren’t things many people write about and I was happy to get some advice on how to handle things in the event…

Without going on too much more, I will just say that in today’s world, this book is a must read for everyone.
